Looking for rustic wood

Hello to all,

I've been building some photography props and the boss (wife) likes the design but wants them to look a little more rustic.  I've been to a local re-claimed wood supplier but their prices were insulting.

Home Depot has some barnwood boards that we like but they're a little pricey too.

Does anyone have suggestions on types of wood and suppliers?

Picture below of the first prop made of common pine boards finished to look rustic.  They're a little too smooth for what we're trying to do.

Find a local used pallet supplier. Go to their place of business and ask if you can go through their junk pile or just buy a few junk pallets from them.

Suggestion, make your own rustic boards. A number of years ago, I built a pine construction basement bar for a friend. I then went at it with a propane blowtorch ~ not heavily, just enough to singe edges and surfaces. It looked great.

The thing with pallet wood is it needs to be clean.

Go to Home Depot and get what’s called “ledger board” it’s super rough and has the hand hewn look. I’ve done a ton of “reclaimed look” projects. Here’s some rustic speaker stands I made out of it. I just played with the stain until I got what looked right for the space!

Those look great.  Nice contrast with the modern look of the electronics.  Is the finish just stain or did you topcoat it with something too?

Thanks! Yeah, just stain. Used the cheapest brush in the HD paint bin and various stains to achieve the look of “weathered wood”

Pallets are dirty, who knows what’s was on them and are a total pain to dismantle. It’s nice because it’s free but by the time you wash them, pull them apart, use a metal detector etc it’s eaiser to just “make he look” the ledger boards at Home Depot work really well!

That looks great.  Ill probably go that route and find something else to torch just for the hell of it.

We happen to have a barn falling down and are looking for an insured company to pay us to take it away.

Built circa 1860 as a mule barn. I personally have a love hate relationship with it. I'll be sad when it is finally gone though.
