Since having a baby in November, I don't exactly have a whole lot of time to dedicate towards woodworking so I was looking for a relatively quick, yet functional project.  While flipping through channels, I came across Rough Cut with Tommy Mac on PBS.  He was building a wall cabinet out of solid Walnut.  This looked like just the project I was looking for and it would give me an opportunity to use up a bunch of the Mahogany Shorts I have laying around.

This was also the first project that I got to use with my new MFT.

Overall it's approximately 24" tall, 18" wide and 8" deep.  The finish consists of 3 coats of General Finishes Glossy Arm-R-Seal Urethane Topcoat knocked down with 0000 steel wool in between each coat.

I am very happy with how this project turned out.

Very nice!  Isn't that MFT grand?

I really like the finish.  I have a tendency to make walnut too dark, but I really like the lighter touch you used.

And congrats on the November baby!

The MFT is great.  I have 15 systainers and cannot believe how much the MFT enhances the whole Festool system.  My tablesaw and workbench gets much less use now that I use the MFT.

Thanks on the congrats.  Being a Father is fantastic.

Congrats on the little one.

nice looking cabinet how about using a stoped housing on the fixed shelf on the next one..

Oh and I wish my shorts were as long as yours [big grin]

Everything is awesome except it's not sitting level, either that or your wallpaper is off. But cheers and congrats on the little one

Tim congratulations on the little new woodworker !  Nice looking project and glad you like the mft it is an awesome addition to the shop !  Thanks for sharing. !

Nice work done there...
I cant believe how light your Mahagany is, the Mahagany that we we get is closer to the color of the unit to the left of the one featured.

After you posted this, I thought the same thing so I rechecked it with a bullet level - dead on.  I used my laser level to hang it.  I guess it's just an optical illusion.

It's Honduran Mahogany.  I used a natural finish on it.

It's gotta be the wall paper. It really is a beautiful piece though you did a great job.

Give it a few months, that mahogany will darken considerably.

Good job.

...

I think that it only looks off because the top of the unit stands out from the wall while the bottom rests tight against the wall -- thus the stripes in the wallpaper don't align with the vertical edge of your piece when viewed from a slight angle.  So, not really an optical illusion at all.  Nice piece.

whats up with the big chunk sanded out smooth on the right side end panel up near the dental moulding?

Character of course!

Actually I have no idea how that happened because I didn't notice it until after I put on the 2nd coat of finish.  I think I just got careless with the sander.

Thanks for sharing! I like seeing fine stuff like this made with Festools. Gives me hope that I will be able to get a project done after my current work project. I'm also glad to hear another vote of confidence for the MFT. I just picked one up and will have it set up later this week. (I need to build a couple of shelfs for the workshop first to make room.) If you don't mind my asking, what did you find the MFT helped with the most?

Being a Dad is great. I showed my four year-old my shop for the first time yesterday. (We just moved and it is tucked away in a small room in the corner of our dark basement. I got the ultimate compliment when she told me that she thought it was cute. (I was thinking that it was small and cramped!)

Miter cuts by far.  I can do them with my Table Saw and SCMS (DeWalt 708), but I found the repeatability and accuracy 2nd to none using the MFT.  Also, the top gave me so much flexibility when it came to clamping and sanding.
