OF 2200 in CMS

Hi,

I just received my brand new CMS and OF2200 and have a question for my european colleagues or lucky people who were able to test it in Festool workshop.
I installed the OF 2200 on the routing plate and have a slight problem.
If I put the CMS plate upside down (meaning, with the motor of the OF to the top), then the lift works very well. The weight of the OF helps it to go down and the spring helps to bring it up (like during normal use, but here, it is by turning the crank that you move it up & down).

However, when I put the CMS plate in working position in the route table, then it is almost impossible to lift the router with the plastic crank. I have to lift the router by hand above the position where I want the router bit, then turn the crank to bring the lift against the router. And then I can use the crank to do fine tuning, but only by decreasing the height of the bit.
It seems that the router is too heavy and when I want to lift it, it tilts slightly and get stuck against the column which is opposite to the lift.

Is it a problem that other lucky owners of the CMS & OF 2200 also have?

I really hope for you that the CMS will become available soon in NA as it is really a superb piece of equipment. I also have the TS 55 module with the sliding table, and both modules are really great.

Good Evening jnnikko,

Sorry to tell you, that it is a common problem with the 2200 in the CMS. Festool UK will not admit to it but its there. The way you are having to use it ie. lift by hand and lower on the crank, is the only way you can use it.

This inherent design problem may be one reason the American market may not see the CMS/OF2200 any time soon. I dont think the American market would tolerate this as they have access to some really first class router lifts and the CMS/OF2200 would look shoddy in comparison.

Haha, I have the same problem, mine arrived yesterday, but what I have found is that it's in part due to a brand new router that hasn't been used. I just plunged mine a hundred or so times (off, no bit or anything) just to wear in the mechanism a bit and now works fine.

Thanks to both of you.
I will then try mattfc solution and if it does not work, I will live with that.
Not so much of an issue, just annoying.

Hi Guys,

Mine worked ok ish when new and as time went on this problem has become permanent.

That has got to be disappointing. I removed/ stretched/ trimmed the springs in my OF2000 to ease use of a non-Festool lift mechanism- but I realize this shouldn't be necessary in the CMS unit that the router is designed to work in
I'd return the CMS and wait for the problem to be remedied

Because I live in the USA I cannot buy the CMS from Festool USA.

During the recent Door and Drawer Class in Henderson, we used 2 different CMS. One was fitted with an OF1400. Instructor Brian Sedgeley had previously adjusted the OF1400 to make the "cope" cut on door rails. As soon as each of us finished coping our rails, we all watched Brian setting the corresponding cutter to run the "sticks" It was necessary to remove the router mounting plate from the CMS.

Next we switched the hoses from a CT36 to the other CMS fitted with a new OF2200 to raise the panel on solid lumber doors. Although Brian had previously mounted that cutter, while we all watched he removed it from the OF2200 by simply raising the collet using the crank. After re-fitting it there was no problem lowering the collet and then adjusting the height of the cutter using the crank.

This seems strange to me.Why would you have to remove the OF1400?

Probably to get the bit out. On mine with a 1400, for most bits I can wind the router to highest point in the CMS and use the spanner on the collet at a slight angle, avoiding taking the router off the plate. I can image for a large bit such as doing rails that if the bit is pushed deep into the collet you couldn't get good access from the top. One of those cranked router spammers would be good!

Yeah I know it's tight with large diameter bits but like you say you just don't push the bit all the way down or a cranked spanner is the answer.Have to say I've never had a problem with rail and stile bits.Mine have marks on for the minimum depth.....

Has anyone tried removing the plunger spring from the 2200? How To Remove Plunger Spring While it wouldn't be a very good solution for someone who wants to swap routers at a moment's notice, it looks like it would help a sticky 2200 mounted in a router table.

Cheers,

Paul

I realize that the OP was posting from France, but there have been questions from NA members and there will be readers from everywhere, so:

"Statement from Festool.
