Hey guys,

More of an informative post than anything;

I'm still debating whether to get the OF1400 to combine with my trend hinge jig, which requires a 16mm guide bush with a 12mm cutter. Only trouble here, Festool don't make a 16mm Guide bush..

I Emailed Trend to see if they did any such accessories that would allow me to use the router with the jig, and here is the reply I received;

Hi

Thanks for your enquiry.

I have checked the compatibility for your Festool router, and can tell you that our UNIBASE will not fit directly. However you can purchase a GB/5/S, which is a special base drilled just to suit your router. This base fits to the bottom of your router, and then allows you to fit our guide bushes, enabling you to use the jigs.

Thank  you

Regards

Hope this helps clear up some confusion with anyone who also wants to use this combination.

There is a far nicer option, I bought mine from Axminster for my OF 2000 and they also do an adapter for the 1400
Leigh adapters for threaded guide bushes £20.00
UJK threaded guide bush set £32.00

Hope this helps

And if you want my advise on your choice of jigsaw, go for the mafell, it outshines all the competition

I also sent an email to Axminster, but as of yet, no reply.

Will have to take a look at those sets, thanks for the advice!

Hmm.. do mafell do a green version though? ;)

Instead of the recommended 16mm guide bush & 12mm bit, could you not just use the Festool 17mm guide bush, with a 1/2" (12.7mm) bit?

That would be a lot easier, and would only make your opening 0.3mm smaller.

I use the OF1010 and the Trend hinge jig.  I use the Festool 17mm guide bush, the standard Trend cutter and INSTEAD of the 4mm setting spacer that comes with the hinge jig I use a 5mm one (i find a 5 mm twist bit perfect for this).  This overcomes the difference of using the 17mm guide bush instead of the 16mm one specified.  It works perfect every time and does away with the need for messy sub-bases and allows you to use the long-reach router bit necessary when using the Trend hinge jig.

Personally I think the Trend hinge jig (the one-piece one) is the finest available; robust, easy to set-up and easy to use.

I have the 1010 and 1400 and have used both with my trend jig.
Purchase the Leigh bush adapters from Axminster and then the UJK bush set.
This means you have various sizes for any of these jigs etc.
it has also allowed me to experiment with bush and cutters to create a patch repair or inlay set up so its a great accessory.
Hope that helps.

I think you'll find it will!  Although you have a different Trend jig to me the principle of how it works is still the same. Thus:

If routing a 100mm hinge the jig using the 'standard operating instructions' you set the jig aperture at 100mm (using the hinge) plus 4mm (using the supplied 4mm spacer) giving a total of 104mm.  If you rout this using a 16mm bush with the 12mm cutter then you end up with the required 100mm recess for the hinge.

Using my method you set the aperture at 100mm (hinge) plus  5mm (new spacer) giving a total of 105mm.  If you rout this using the obtainable Festool 17mm bush plus the recommended 12mm Trend router cutter then after routing you end up with the required 100mm recess for the hinge.

Try it and see.

Hi WelshWood

I agree with part of PhilPhilOp's post- the Leigh adapter for the OF1400 and the UJK Guide Bush Set is a superb setup. I also use it in a similar setup with the OF1010.

I use it all of the time and have just shown the UJK set in a video that I am making.

It is also great value for money.

I do what Troll does, as he says just use something 5mm instead of the 4mm spacer supplied, I use a 5mm plastic packer.

why waste money on an extra bush and adaptor I'd use a 5mm spacer everytime

Will check it out when I order the router in the coming days/weeks, will test it out and see what method I prefer. Having the guide bush set would be an advantage for my homemade jigs too though..

No not yet. I will PM you a list of the videos that show the utility of the UJK Guide Bush Set.

The video that I mentioned above is still being made - I am showing how to make a simple kitchen chair using the DF500 and use the 30mm bush from the UJK set in a special trammel to produce the curved seat backs.

I may put the chair video in the Members' Projects section when it is complete.

I am not sure if this will also help...

I made a video to help novices hang a door but from about the 5 minute point you will see the home made guide that I use for cutting hinge recesses. I have never bought a hinge cutting jig in my life and never will, they only take a few minutes to make.

In this video I am using the OF1400, with a guide bush from the UJK set, and my home made guide to cut the slots for some 62 mm hinges:

Having recently invested heavily (very heavily) in Festool equipment with which I am generally very pleased (particularly the integration of the power tools with the M class extractor; the ladies love the cleanliness), The 17mm bush issue with Trend hinge jigs has really pissed me off, not because of any serious practical issue but it reflects a certain attitude from Festool. Festool replied to me indicating they had no intention of producing the 16mm bush because they have an 'integrated system approach'; they don't even make many jigs!!!. No problem, I didn't pay£XXXX for a OF1400 just to cut hinge slots which would have been far too powerful for the task. At least the Trend lock jigs require a 30mm guide bush which is more suited to the 12mm shank capability of the OF1400 and a Festool 30mm copy ring is available. Great idea below suggesting using the 17mm copy ring with a 12.7mm cutter; will definitely try this out. Finally, as regards Trend jigs: I have just bought the 2 piece skeleton hinge jig solely on the basis of the rave reviews given by many. Very disappointed with the quality. When the hinge locator guides are tightened such that they will not move during routing, the skeleton frame has bowed considerably; far more than any misfit caused by an incorrectly sized 17mm Festool copy ring. Is this just my experience? £300 down the drain.

Trend have been good to me in the past, but take it back, not fit for purpose (in your case). Don't think of it as a waste of £300 mate.

They've sent me a new square when I sent them photos of their square being out by (waaay over) the tolerances they give. And they've sent me a new diamond stone when a Trend tct bit ripped the diamonds out of one of the tct sharpening cards I've had off them.

Just want to let everyone know that the 17mm copy ring works perfectly with a 12.7 kitchen router bit. The time it save is great it takes about of time to figure it out if you have never used one before here are some photos
