Questions from New Kapex User

Hi There,

New Kapex KS120 user here hoping for some guidance:

1.) My first project is to cut 4 1/4" baseboard vertically against the fence. The laser often doesn't extend to the top of the molding. And when it does it's commonly only one of the laser lines. Is this normal? (note: the laser window is clean)

2.) Any advice on how to fine adjust the bevel? I can't find a sweet spot loosening the screws just enough to micro adjust the motor head without causing it to move on its own. Is there any way to lock in dead zero with the micro adjust handle and then move the calibration mechanism to make that the new zero? Or any other pro tips?

3.) The laser is over 1/16" off the cut line and needs adjustment. Does Festool charge for the replacement stickers or send them if you ask? The CS guy I talked to wanted me to buy one. I've had the unit for a week and don't want to immediately give it the Swiss cheese look.

Many Thanks!
Paul

Paul,

If you don’t have the supplemental manual yet, go grab it from the FestoolUSA site link at the bottom of the post. It should contain the information you are looking for regarding dialing in the calibration permanently.

For the laser lines on the taller base. I can’t say I have a proven method for what you are doing but when I am dialing in the material position sometimes I raise and lower the saw head as well as lifting the blade guard to get the lines to come in un-broken. Additionally have you tried cutting the baseboard lying flat? I would never do this before owning a Kapex. But this is how I now do it.

And don’t worry about Swiss cheesing the sticker. I poked the necessary holes in mine, then ordered the replacement sticker, and have yet to install it. I forget the holes are even there and it’s been 5 years at least.  The sticker itself is pretty inexpensive, but the shipping can get you. You may just want to wait until you need something else and then request it at that time.

Because the laser shines through the holes along the bottom of the plastic blade guard, just move the saw forward or back slightly to move the laser so you get 2 lines where you want.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I've read the bevel adjustment section of the supplemental manual and it goes into a lot of detail on determining the error but not much on how to effectively make small calibration adjustments. I'll continue to experiment. Bevel accuracy is rather important for tall vertically nested workpieces. I've cut on the flat but personally find it less efficient. Thanks again!

I put a logo sticker over my laser holes,
Or a piece of tape will do.
