Rolair JC 10 Problem

I have had the JC 10 for a couple of years now and have been very happy with its performance.  For a 1hp compressor, it has performed way above expectations.

On Thursday, I started it up with intentions to service my mower (change blades, grease, and other items where I use air tools and blower for cleaning hard to get at spots.).  As it was building pressure, i was moving equipment and setting up the mower to do what I had to do.  I then went back to the compressor to uncoil air hose and the relief valve was still hissing away.  I found the part i need on the Rolair site and tried to send an order to Rolair.  AND THAT IS WHERE THE PROBLEM STARTED.

I composed and E-mail and tried to send to Rolair Service.  I got a message that I had to sign up for a different E-mail provider. I happen to have had aol.com ever since my very first computer.  I tried to sign up for the recommended E-service and run into a stone wall.

I went to a couple of other sites where they indicate they sell JC 10 parts, but I cannot find the part I think I need on either of the sites.

I was visiting with a cousin yesterday and she knows quite a bit about computer operation, so I explained my problem to her.  She immediately tried to get thru to Rolair.  She ran into the same problem as I when trying to send an e mail.  She tried via Facebook, twitter and linked in, all of which she has membership.  (I do not use any of those groups and have no desire or intention to do so)  Nothing works for her except messages about she should make changes to her own programming.

I have tried Friday afternoon several local sources to find the part I think I need.  No luck.  Saturday, I was doing monthly billing most of the day, but can think of no local services where I can find the part where I have not looked anyhow.

I have spent, over the last two years, a lot of time expounding on my complete satisfaction with my JC 10.  I have found it to be far superior to any compressor of like size that i have used in the past.  I would like to find the part, a simple little hex nut with a tiny ball inside and a diaphragm on the opposite end of the nut.  If I cannot find the part anywhere, or even contact Rolair for the part, the machine becomes quite useless. I finally went to my lawn equipment shop to have him service my mower (it bothers my back, neck, shoulder and wrist to do that job without air >>> just part of the hazards of being 39) right away.  He jumped right on the project and i am good to go.  My friend, John, has always given me priority service.

I do not expect such fine service from anywhere else. I do expect at least an interest.  Apparently, Rolair has set up roadblocks making it very difficult to reach them when parts help is needed. I'm somewhat disappointed to discover that. If I cannot get any service from a supplier, I cease doing business with that supplier.  I also stop recommending.  It is a fine machine, but if service is such an obstacle, it is not worth much to me.

I have a very busy week ahead in preparing properties for the holiday weekend and am leaving for work before 8 am and returning home late in the day, probably too late to make a long distance phone call.  Tomorrow it may rain, in which case, I will try the phone method.  I hope that works out better.

A couple of drops of light machine oil may fix the valve. I know someone who had the same issue with the valve, it corrected itself after a couple of cycles.

I know this doesn't solve the contact issue, may help the compressor though.

Just tried their website contact section, the email went right through.

Wayne,

I've bought three Rolair compressors and all three had problems with the drain valves and the relief valve.  My local tool repair shop stocks valves that fit and I just bought them from there rather than go through the potential hassle  of trying to go to Rolair.  These parts weren't that expensive, so maybe you can buy them locally and save yourself some hassle?

Why would you not just call them? If you did call you could talk to someone who could make sure you have the correct part and they might have just sent it to you for free. Complaining here makes no sense.

actually, complaining here makes perfect sense, in a roundabout bizarre yet ultimately helpful way.  first, it gets the rage off your chest in a classier way than posting on the 'rants and raves' section of you local craigslist.  second, it's a great way to put 'tinkers' in touch with 'thinkers'--ha, could not resist that one...

to wit:

well, the first issue here is understanding the nature of your problem.  the main problem as i see it is NOT the fact that your compressor needs service.  That particular valve problem on your Rolair only serves to point to your main problems as i see them:

-you're still using aol email.  aol can be likened to sears and kodak.  don't know for sure because i'm not an IT guy, but i suspect that the website programmers such as the ones for rolair's site have excluded aol emails because of spam issues or something.  what i do know for sure is that most have moved past the poorly supported platform that is aol service.

-for some reason you can't set up an alternate email account.  the "stone wall" that you mention is too vague of a description to be able to diagnose a useful recommendation.

-you went to your "computer-savvy" cousin to twitter a service call to rolair.  too many issues in that one little sentence to even attempt to explain.

-you don't seem to have the ability to make a long distance phone call in the middle of your day.

now i realize that frustration has built upon frustration to the point that you're complaining about your issue on a german-owned tool forum about a perceived service contact problem regarding a tool company out of wisconsin.  i can't tell you what you should do about the above, because i realize that everyone has certain mindsets, circumstances, etc, and i can understand that for a large part of what you do, your present setup may work just fine.

however, if i personally was in your shoes this minute this is what i think i would do for myself:
-i would follow that suggestion provided and most likely fix the whole problem with a squirt of lube.
-i would overcome whatever obstacle and set up a free email with a current mainstream provider like google gmail or MS hotmail etc., knowing that it's something that will only help me going forward.
-i would think about borrowing a friend's cell phone at lunch and while i'm on hold on speakerphone i would try to beat his 'angry birds' score
-better yet, i would google 'rolair parts and service' and click on the first non-ad link.  which i did, and it took me to mastertoolrepair.com, an online store that sells parts for many compressors.  in literally two minutes, i would click on rolair, click on jc10, look at the schematic, identify the jc800-47 safety relief valve for $16.55, add it to my cart, pay for it with my credit card or paypal account and get on with my day.

this is really meant to be factual and helpful.  the main theme here is that identifying the real problem is the majority of the battle.  good luck tinker.

thanks for all suggestions.

I had already tried the light oil, also WD 40.

Hi Tinker--
Sorry to hear about your troubles with the valves, and with the email.  Hopefully we can get this resolved quickly!

First, to address the valve, those are typically pretty solid, but after a few years of use it is possible there might be some dirt/debris buildup preventing it to seal properly.  So before you go any further, we’d love a chance to help troubleshoot your problem, and possibly even avoid you having to buy a new valve.  So if you could, give our Customer Service Department a call at 800-310-3573.. once connected just dial ‘0’ and ask for the next available Compressor Specialist.

As for the email trouble, it’s hard to say for certain what the issue is, but at this point (and any other future issue) I’d say it’s always best to just give us a call.  We take quite a bit of pride in having a staff on hand that is knowledgeable about our product, and we’d love the chance to help you out one-to-one over the phone.  I know for certain we have helped out several FOG members in the past, and given the support we have received on this site over the years, our CS Dept is always willing to go the extra mile to alleviate any issues with FOG members.

Again, best number to reach us is 800-310-3573.  Very sorry about your trouble, and thanks for your patience.  We hope to hear from you soon and we’ll get this taken care of asap!

hey, would you look at that--the Rolair guy reads the FOG!  If my Ingersoll Rand compressor ever conks out, I'll definitely be looking at Rolair's offerings.

well done, Tinker.  Here you had us all wondering why you were regaling the fogsters with your non-festool tales of woe, not to mention sharing such fascinating detailed accounts of your weekly to-do list.  But you must have sensed that the right thing to do was to post on here and have the manufacturer come to the rescue in no time flat!  I know I learned something today:  The FOG force is getting stronger by the day...

Ya, I was pretty impressed with that too. A single guy has a problem with an old compressor and Rolair guy to the rescue. [thumbs up] Makes me think twice about my next Ingersoll Rand purchase.

I had an issue with my JC-10 and called.  Got great service.  Regardless of what you might think with my participation and postings here - I really hate to deal with any service issues via email.  I just am old school and prefer to talk to someone real time.

The good companies will always distinguish themselves from he lessors Thur customer service.  Or they will go by the wayside.

I was sure somebody from Rolair would be checking in.  They have checked in before. I have been away from FOG for a few days with my day job problems.  couple of storms gave me plenty of extra work on several properties.  By time i got home each afternoon, i just sort of collapsed as soon as i fell thru the door.  that sort of work (chainsaw and lugging) was fine when i was 38.  Not so much now i am 39.

I learned a lot from several of the replies, and to those replies, I am thankful.  Especially from teocaf.  He went into great, and very helpful detail.

To Mr Doug Schlefke @ Rolair, Thankyou for your reply.  Some responders had suggested, as did you, that i should have called via phone.  Had the problem occurred earlier in the week, i probably would have called before searching for the part locally.  By time i ran out of options, I was into the weekend.  I apologize if i came across as being angry.  After re-reading my original post in, I guess i did sound angry.  Frustrated, yes.  angry, NO.

I did try everything i could think of to free up that little button.  A few years ago, probably when I was 37, I might have freed it with one of my trusty stone hammers.  Since i have a perfectly good compressor, a blast of air might have done the job >>> oops! the compressor wasn't working just then.

The next morning after my reply to other suggestions, I had to pick up some materials right across from a place where I have had electric motors repaired in the dim past.  On a hunch they might know something about compressors (the JC 10 happens to be attached to an electric motor  ::)) I stopped in for a chat.  The boss, who, BTW, appeared to have been 39 almost as long as I, thought they had what I was looking for.  After several minutes, he decide his stock of the item was at Rolair.  We ordered and paid for. They are familiar with Rolair (he told me).  As long as he knows compressors, that's a big step.

It really bothers my back to work on almost anything i have to bend over for.  Also, my neck, my right shoulder, my left wrist, my right knee and so on.  If I am going to be aching, and often not able to straighten up after bending over, i much prefer to be getting in pain doing the things i really enjoy doing.  That way, my head does not get to aching as well as all the rest.  If the ordered part does not do the trick, I will just load the whole machine into the back of the car, take it to the electric motor/compressor guy and let him play with it while I come back to my shop, or lawn mowers and chainsaws, and play.  As a matter of fact, i spent much of my day Sunday heading up to The Berkshires to fix a minor problem on a table i had delivered the week before.  By the time i had disassembled, fixed the problem and reassembled, i could not straighten up any higher than to crawl on hands and knees.  By time I managed to get back on my feet, I could present a semblance of walking.  But, I had fun doing the project.  To disassemble a bunch of metal parts to find the problem, for me, that ain't fun.  When I get to be 40, maybe the rest won't be fun, but I will definitely keep struggling.  I figure I have another 50 years or so before i get to be 40.  [wink]

Thanks again for your advice Mr. Doug Schlefke @ Rolair.  I was pretty sure you, or one of your buddies, would be tuning in and giving good advice
