Setting My New Shop Up (Formerly Shop Build Progress)

I buy as needed. I hate wood lying around taking up space. I am thinking of building a out building / Shed for storage since I have the land.

I could set aside a area for lumber storage. But then I only buy as needed. Its a habit Ive gotten into when I first started wood working 27 Years ago. I was in a single car garage for years, then moved to a standard garage 20 x 20 sizes building. So I never had room for wood storage .

As far as shop time, didnt get any yesterday. gonna be busy today with the visiting Inlaws. Hopefully Ill squeeze some time in. i get antsy knowing theirs stuff to do and not being able to get at it.
 
Yes Sir..... Feeling great. Been tap dancin around the shop making domino drawers,

Got a set (5 ea) ready to take out of the clamps sand and install and post some photos when installed.

I may have to remake one. Ill find out when i try to install it.
 
Been trying to get out into the shop, ran out of glue and need to pick up a few things. Been tied up with the SIL/MIL visiting. Put them on a jet home home yesterday so today running out to buy the glue etc , sand and fit the drawers hopfully start installing them.

Sounds like you missed the opportunity to hang drywall on the ceiling, that's what family is for.
 
I tried to get Teres mother to give me a hand but at 88 she's gotten lazy. darn cane keeps getting in the way  [big grin]

 
Happy New Year everyone, I hope 2021 will be prosperous, safe and healthy this coming year.

So I got the MIL and SIL on the jet yesterday , they're back home in Mexico.

I wished they would of stayed longer (puts the wife inna good mood and happy all the time).

So I got back to work in the shop today.

Glued up a set of drawers and installed them today,  now one more set for that side of the miter saw. Then Ill level the tables install the fence on that side and get busy on the other.

I think the Other side will be different maybe 2 doors and a set of drawers in the middle. I am going to have go back and remake a couple of those drawers but theyre good for now

Oh and I picked up a couple of trash cans one for the shop the other I set under my wall mounted dust collector. I got the bag which doesnt hold much sitting in the trash can Im thinking of buying some 4" hose and running it from the botton of the Dust collector into the trash can, cutting a hole in the lid and let the dust run directly into the can. No biggie really but Ill take a photo and post it tomorrow.

Right now its just the bag in the can.

Well made another set of drawers, now that Im set up got the tools set up Im knocking them out. I was surprised how quickly I got all the pieces cut and milled. tomorrow glue up and hopefully install.

Heres the photo of my wall mounted DC. Im planning on lowering it a bit so the bag will fit better. It has a zipper on the bottom to empty it. I unzipped it let the dust go into the can.

That bag fills up very fast.

Remember its just for the jointer and planer. Im thinking about getting a piece of 4" hose, cutting a hole in the lid of the trash can and run the hose directly into the trash can.

What ya think of that idea?

Maybe I misunderstood what you’re saying about running a hose directly into the trash can but you need the bag (or some other kind of filter) to let the air flow through. A hose from the impeller directly to the closed can would blow the lid off and send debris everywhere. Or, if you did a great job of keeping the lid on, the system wouldn’t collect any debris from the planer.

If you made a big fitting that the zippered end of the bag could fit over, and that fit tight on the trash can, and that the hose from the impeller fit into, then you wouldn’t have to mess with the bag as much (just bang on the sides occasionally), but you’d be better off to buy an inexpensive dust collector, and maybe modify it a little, take it apart and mount it up out of the way on the wall.

If you think through the evolution of small shop dust collectors you can choose features that would suit your shop better. The first version that went beyond what you have was to add an upper bag so flow would not be impeded even when the lower bag became full. Next, the lower bag was replaced with a can. Then the upper bag was replaced with a pleated filter (and often included an integral shaker to clear the pleats). Cyclonic separation was added too.

The easiest improvement for you setup is to get a bigger bag. Next would be to hang the bag upside down over a trash can with a big Tee fitting in between the bag and can. That would probably be satisfactory.

It could be used if you made a way to securely connect the plastic bag to the open zippered end of the cloth bag. Or better yet a large Tee between trash bag and overhead upside down cloth bag would probably work.

You need a cloth bag or other filter to allow the air to pass through. Otherwise the system won’t suck, like what happens when the exhaust port is clogged on a vac.

Another example of very simple dust collector is a Delta I bought about 40 years ago. It is a large fiber drum on wheels in which the debris is collected. On top of the drum is a special lid which supports the motor/impeller. The impeller sucks air out of the drum and blows it through a cloth bag that is attached to the impeller which a large hose clamp. The vac created in the drum pulls debris in through the flexible hose which is connected to the planer or jointer. It works very poorly but is better than nothing. It would be a good candidate for adding a Thien baffle but I went with a Jet be with pleated filter drum instead.

It’s a primitive design. Too much of the debris goes into the bag which fills and reduces flow which reduces suction just like when the vac bag fills. A Thien baffle would greatly reduce the amount of stuff going into the bag.
 
What about building a chip box?
In the top would be a connection for the dust collector that goes down into the box.
In either a side panel or the top would be a pleated air filter, like a HVAC cold air return grille that accepts a filter.
 
Ron - You can keep the trash can idea if you want but you have to devise a way to let the air out of the can without letting the dust out. There are a lot of examples on the interwebs. Many folks replace the top of the can with a home made one that includes a fittong for the udt hose and the a spot for a replaceable filter to release the air but keep the dust in.

You could also look for a bigger cloth bag to replace the current smaller bag.

But you might want to take a hard look at upgrading your dust collector. I'm looking at a couple from Oneida:

Thanks guys. Ive axed on another forum and they came up with something similar as the rockler separator . Personally  think Id rather buy a large replacement bag. This isnt going to me my main DC its just for the planer and jointer which I use infrequently.

Well today, Assembled the drawers for the last cabinet on that side. Went to lunch with the wife had a nice day. Tomorrow sand and install the drawers.

These didn't come out to well, But they are for the garage Ill redo them in the future. The goal now is to set the shop up.

I think you will need to have some place for the exhaust air to go. Right now it filters out through the bag I would expect, but once you hard pipe that into the trash can there will no longer be any venting and you will be trying to pressurize the can.

My DW735 planer came with a cloth topper for a trash can. It has a drawstring closure around the top of the can and connects to a 4" hose which runs to the planer. You could set up something similar which should work if you don't have one already.
