Setting My New Shop Up (Formerly Shop Build Progress)

[member=11629]GarryMartin[/member]

Hey Garry good to see yer name here again?

I havent seen it in quite a while.

All my stuff made it back which Im very lucky.

Lemme me when ya decide to come across the pond

It would be great seeing ya and hanging out again

Maybe even have another get together in yer honor  [big grin]

well Nothing fancy or special but I made a book case to hold some of my sustainers the tools I use most w my vac clamps. Remember Nothing is installed and won't be until after the shop is insulated. I also added some drawers on another cabinet. Now i get to organize the drawers I made.

Heres a tip get a label maker and label / list the stuff in the drawers will save a lot of frustration.

Heres some photos of what i did shops still a mess to BTW

Still a work in progress. I started maing a top for my STM it will become my assembly table. I decided on using ultra lightweight 3/4 MDF.
Not only is it cheaper its a better material to abuse and it weighs about the same as 3/4 ply. I ripped it down the middle at 24' and shortened the length to 7' to fit the STM better. Im using 4 braces to hold the top to the sam 2 per side.

Im using the woodpeckers jig to make the 20mm holes. Not stressing whether theyre perfectly aligned as its just for clamping using dogs to help with assy. I dont do any hard pounding either. his should help with glue ups to. If I cut anything ill remove the top and use the STM (after all thats what is for) and I use the GRS for cutting anyway

Heres a photo of one side (its all I finished today) cut into 2 pieces IMO will make it more versitle to as I may not need a full 48" wide area for assy and glue up.

I might go tomorrow to visit tombstone w my daughter.

So this may take a few days to post the final photos of it

Think you are doing great Jobsworth.
Having time to do the important things first is valuable, believe me, I know.
Getting work surface, benches, drawers and so on first to move into place when walls are ready are great. I’m struggling building up my temporary cramped space, without putting too much time I don’t have into it, but still keeping it ergonomic is time consuming.
I need my shop for my ongoing renovation, and very much for those small nice to do projects that brings the fun and hobby into it, I call it breaks  [big grin]

Me to. I have a lot of projects to do in the house. Thats why the rush to get the shop in order. I ave a new built house and need to make it mine.

BTW, Im starting to take bids to get the insulation done.

Then I can permenanty install and adjust/ align everything and Ive built. Ill see how much more they will charge to install drywall to. If theres not that much difference ill go with that to. I have a budget in mind.

If the drywall is out of budget then ill come up with something else or wait till next year .

This is coming along nicely, Ron. Do you have the pic of the final set-up of your top on the STM? Where did you source the lightweight MDF? That seems like a great solution for a nice, large top.

Hey Scot good to hear from ya.

I haven't finished it yet. But when I do Ill post it here. I spent the day with my daughter. At first we were planning on going to tombstone see the OK corral. But she had a flat tire so We changed the tire, put the spare on drove it to the tire store to get it repaired.

We had fun hanging out looking at a few stores for something she wanted to get. Her car wasnt ready till about 3. They had it all day.

Anyway Ill get busy on it tomorrow should just about finish it tomorrow.

I continued on making the top that will sit on my STM and become my assembly table.

The MDF is very very light especially cut in 24" widths I think all the material removed from the 20mm holes I added helped reduce weight.

Im thinking of putting some dominos in where the 2 edges come together for alignment purposes. I also have some ideas to make the rackets usable as they wouldnt work for some reason.

But heres the photos of the top sitting on the STM which will become my assembly table.

I routed the other half setting it on a soon to be work bench which was formerly the top of my miter saw station.
It seemed to work  much better and had a better result.

I also used the the things on the STM used for setting plywood on to load it on the STM as stops for alignment helps a lot

Here is the STM config I used when setting the top on it

Very nice (large) shop! As far as Dominos to align your tops, I have three 32"x48" slabs that make up a teardown work table. I'm going to try to use a few Domino connectors to hold them tight.

My only concern might be the dominoes reducing the strength on the edge of the MDF.  You might just use three cross pieces of 1x material with countersunk flathead screws into threaded inserts.  Gives you alignment and strength so you could potentially move the entire top with no risk of breakage.  You likely could not do that confidently with just loose Dominoes in the edge.

I put a Stanton bench top across one end of my STM1800 and really like the versatility of the dog holes and t-track with the top aligned to the other brackets of the STM1800.

Nice work on the shop!

Very nice and a great work surface! Did you attach the top with the clips Festool sells (like the video Sedge showed when they did a FT Live a few month's ago)? Or is this just held with gravity?

Thanks!

Im thinking about just using the FT quick clamps to hold the tops down the dominos are for alignment purposes only Im going to start out using 4 dominos accross the top see how that works.

Ive thought about make a strong back on the underside. We'll see what happens

I got a cabinet to build today making a pocket hole station for my kreg jig. Photos to follow as things take shape.

Ill find out if I need to make any adjustments to the top. This will be the first time using it.

This is only the prototype for me.

[member=6605]ScotF[/member]

I got 4 of the clips. I use 2 for the small work table like Sedge showed in his video.

Makes a nice small parts stand when Im making drawers.

Im going to order  4 more to see how they work.

If they do what Im hoping I might just make this top modular in 4 sections.

All:
I know it seems like Im jumpig all over the place.

I have a lot of ideas how to proceed with this assembly top. Im have conversations with others who have done the same thing, so its a day by thing on how this will end up.

Please be patient.

I dont want to be like most and show only the end item.
I want to be able show and explain my thoughts as to why Im doing what Im doing.

Plus I get great feed back from ya'll which is what I like and want.

Were all in this together right?

Sharing ideas and concept.

For me right now its just a matter of testing this out. Make adjustments accordingly.

This will evolve as most things in a shop do.

This is my (1st) photo type.

Well tried the assembly top yesterday. I was a perfect size. However I found it does need some support on the ends or maybe trim it about a foot smaller in length.

Im going to use some of the FT clips/brackets/terminals and do some adjustments to see if that would make the ends more stable before I cut them.

Will keep ya informed as things chug along.

So on to Proto type rev 1

Nice work on the shop!

That’s a great idea. The “Stanton top” is really nice, I think he did put a fire to many with that one. I’m looking at the Centipede foldable MFT style top to go with some customisation off course.

@ Mike Goetzke

Great idea using the connectors to hold the pieces together. gives me a excue to buy the kit. Always want to get the connectors but didnt have a need. Now you gave me one  [big grin] [big grin]

Ok so I think I solved my problem connecting the assy top to the STM. I ended up using 4 brackets/clips/terminal one on each end of the STM.

I used 2" thick pine I had left over cut to 70mm which is the size of the large wooden piece on the ends of the STM.

I took a festool rabbiting bot that I bought back from the UK and didnt mount my 2200 in my CMS and routed a rabbit to fit the bracket/clip/terminal. Photo of the rabbiting bit its the only bit that FT has that mounts to a arbor (sold seperately of course)

so I posted photos of the rabbited wood and the wood in the brackets. Now to secure the top to the bracket/wood.

Im thinking I might add a couple screws from the top and adjust the top so I can use a through domino from the 700. that should hold it securely

Mike Goetzke suggested that I use connectors to keep the sides together, thats a great Idea. Im gonna use it when I get my hand on some connectors or get the kit.

Used 3 ea and a screw per bracket to secure top. got a used 12x50s (they were 12x100) but cut them in half.

Kind of blurry
