Favor for a friend little project today. He asked me months ago about making him something for his lighter collection. I said sure, bring them in. He showed up with a little cardboard box full of them....and they sat in my toolbox for way too long.
I had some free time today, so design/build. I had some Poplar scraps that were already planed to 1/4" x 3". Half-laps for the grid, 1/4" ply back, and I milled up some more Poplar for the top/bottom.
That odd little red one, on the left, was just not going to fit the squares. I got out the Origin and cut a slot for it, taking advantage of the overhang.
He was impressed, "That's waaay more than I expected" I offered to engrave something into the top or the front edge of the bottom. He said no, it wasn't necessary.

Very nice!

I also dig the two Roll-a-gas looking models in the lower left quadrant, paired up in the same space together.

As a collector he appears to be looking for the next hot thing, he found a great friend.

Nice work. I sometimes order engraved brass plaques for this type of work. You can get them about any size. My source is Amazon.

This collection is his grandfather's doing, he just inherited them. I initially offered to make it bigger, for some "room to grow", and was told it wasn't necessary. He has no particular interest in actually collecting them himself.
My offer to engrave something into it, thinking maybe grandfather's name (or birth/death dates)
I could have put it on the edge of the bottom or in the overhanging ledge, heck anywhere.

Birdhunter I have a handful of blank coins for something more of a maker's mark, also Amazon.
I haven't used any of them yet though.

Thanks guybo

That was just a side effect of trying to make everything fit, same as the one in the lower left. There is a small pocket cut in that one too. Once I was committed to the size, I realized that it was too tall to fit.
Plus, it just kind of fills the space better?

Looks great.  Add a frame mounted picture light to make this really sing.

There are lots of styles available.  Your eye is immediately drawn to the lighted art.

The added advantage of the light attached to the frame is that the “art” will be displayed in a room (that has a wall outlet) and not in a hallway or alongside a staircase which is typically poorly lit.

Shadow boxes particularly benefit from being lit as the items being displayed are recessed.  If a lighted frame is in a roomful of framed art, the only frame that people will notice is the lighted frame.

In your own house, track light usually works best as you can get the light on an angle that best highlights the contents.

But very nice work.  The light would be the cherry on top.

Cool collection!

The guy could actually go to a concert and hold up a lighter instead of an iPhone running the Bic lighter app
