when u cut angles around 50? the rail mount does get in the way for most pieces. how do u guys work around that?

that would help with the rail mount that is mounted on the opposite side of the mft (opposite of the fence) but not with the one right next to the fence. thanks anyway for now!

I think you need to use an auxiliary fence (parallel strip of material, with a thickness equal to or thinner than the piece you're cutting), you can cut the auxiliary fence at an angle, so you'll have support at the guiderail, but it doesn't have to go past the bracket with the hinge. The width would have to be wide enough so the material you're cutting will slide past that bracket.

Personally I haven't used my mft for cuts other than 90 degrees, if I would have to cut something at such a sharp angle and it's too wide for my SCMS (or the angle too sharp), I would go for the angle guide on the guiderail (I have 2 different versions, the festool version and a protool version)

Mosez, how wide is the piece you need to cut?
In the Festool pre-designed mode, where the FS1080 spans the smaller dimension of the MFT, the cutting capacity is smaller than if you rotate the fence and guide rail assembly by 90 degrees, of course this means using a longer FS rail and some carefull setup of the rail brackets.
I agree that steep angles are harder to do when used in the normal way, I had to play around a bit to get my 45 degree setup with the router to groove some panels without having a similar problem.

The other alternative other than posted previously is mark out the piece and use the rail freehand, i.e. line it up and cut.

Hope this is some help.

Rob.

yeah, thats all great help!
thanks a lot guys! i like the auxiliary fence method as well as the longer rail idea...
i just thought i must be doing something wrong when festool provides an angle protratctor and you cannot actually use it right away.
