Can anyone tell me the meaning of DIN 975?  It's a German standard for threaded rod.  What does the standard pertain to, and what does it require?  The practical thing I'm after is to buy a threaded rod that has a pitch as close to one thread per 0.5mm as I can find.  Thanks in advance.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

Biggest diameter threaded rod you're likely to find with a 0.5mm pitch is M5.  That's rare but try searching "metric thread" at www.mcmaster.com.  M3 is much more common.  Also try www.smallparts.com.

Maybe 1mm pitch and turn it half a turn?  I'm making something like the Wonder Dogs right now.  Biggest threaded rod I could get with 1mm pitch is M10.

Unfortunately, I don't own this standard and these standards aren't available for free. But I've a engineering data reference book which has some details. DIN 975 simply describes threaded rods, the official title is "Gewindestangen, stud bolts". There are tables for threaded rods made out of steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminium and plastics. The finish can be plain or zinc. The thread can be left handed or right handed. There are several classes for the strengh. The thred can be a standard (metric) coarse thread or a fine metric thread or a whitworth thread. To me, this reads as interesting as a average phone book - many persons and very little action.

There are many standards like these in Germany - for almost everything you can trade. Simply as a reference for the counterparts which agree to trade threaded rods according to DIN 975, Table A, length 1 meter, strenght class 8.8 ....

A pitch of 0.5 mm would be exactly a M3 (coarse) thread.

Markus

John,

Send me a sketch of what you need. I can make it for you if you are not in too great a hurry as I am going away for a week.
