I have douglas fir subfloor that had to be torn up in spots, and intend to do 5/16" white oak strips (the 2" wide kind that are face nailed) to match the rest of the place. My question is: the 3/4" ply that I used to patch the subfloor is not quite as thick as the original, and I didn't shim it, as I was told that i'd be better off floating a filler substance... so, any ideas what to use? I can caulk the gaps around the replacements (I've already blocked them off below) to keep it from oozing down onto the floor below, but I'm unsure what the best product to use would be.
