Thien Baffle

hi there.

i decided to build a thien baffel . i originally was going to build a bill pentz cyclone mini for the ct22 . i am building a full sized cyclone by his plan but this is on hold until i buy a mig welder. i put a homemade workcenter on my ct22 . this kinda stoped the mini cyclone on top of the vac for now until i get a vac for site work (probable midi). because of the slow progress of the mini cyclone i decided to build a thien baffel. i heard lots of good storys and some bad (not as efficient as a true cyclone). any way i said something is better than nothing. .

i got a barrel (already had)

i used 68 mm downpipe fittings for the dust ports as the ends of the vac hoses fit them good.

[attachthumb=#]

i drilled  2 hole in the top for the  fittings

[attachthumb=#]

i sanded the fittings to fit in the holes perfectly

[attachthumb=#]

i cut out a plywood piece to this shape to allow the chips to fall down but to stop the chips from being sucked back up

[attachthumb=#]

[attachthumb=#]

i put in the fittings to create a swirling motion

[attachthumb=#]

i had to make an adapter out of another downpipe joiner to allow the hose end to snugly fit into the downpipe shoe

this is the final view all assembled

Hello,

I am very curious how this ever worked out since I have the same idea......

Strange to see nobody ever replied to the discussion. I would think this is the perfect addition / solution to a dust collector. Maybe others think differently about a thien separator ?

I have a thien baffle that use in front of my dust collector and have been extremely pleased with it.  My dust collector bag only gets a very, very small amount of very fine dust in it and I hardly ever have to clean my dust collector filter.  I will add, in way of a disclaimer, my use is only as a hobbyist so I don't generate mountains of sawdust.

Thanks.

Why I was particularly intrested in this one is because it is fairly "small".

Even though it is high, the width / diameter would fit above a festool vacuum cleaner. Normaly the Thien separators are all a lot bigger for much bigger dust collectors.

Yours is also connected to a normal shop vacuum cleaner ? I am particularly intrested in if a thien separator of say, roughly 10 inch in diameter, wich would fit inside a "box" that can be mounted on top of the vacuum cleaner, would work.

I asked this question also on the Thien forum but so far nobody there tried anything that small.

So any information is welcome, thanks in advance.

Mine is a 32 gallon unit connected in front of a 2 hp dust collector, but some have made a thien baffle using a 5 gallon plastic bucket.  My dad made a a 32 gallon thien baffle, but uses his with a shop vac and it also works very well.

it worked great. i would reconmend it to every body. i dont know if it would work with a small diameter. the larger the better. it works grteat with the ct22. im going to build a 4 inch version out of a 40 gallon drum

The size that I would have in mind would be the size of a large systainer.

I know this will not hold as much dust as the big buckets that are usualy used but I would like the convinience of it being the same size as a systainer and ofcourse, like a systainer (and like the dust deputy for festool) being able to put it on top of my Festool Vacuum.

Therefore the small size I have in mind. It would be roughly something like 10 inch in diameter. Also not to high but lets say 1/4 of the homemade systainer. (I actualy started out with the idea of building it into a systainer 5 but I forsee problems with getting it airtight etc, so therefore I will build a homemade one)
