I am thinking of building a TV hutch for the living room.  The wall were the tv is located is pretty plain.  It looks like the house was designed to have a large hutch on the wall.  I have my 55" plasma at an angle where it is best viewed by the arrangement of our couch and chairs so I do not want a flat hutch.  I have added some pics of the area and would really like some ideas.  I am confident I can build anything I need to but I am not that creative yet.  Lets here some ideas to keep my TV at a good angle and fill this wall with bookshelves or ??  I also need some space for about 500 DVDs.  I have added some pics of the trim so I can match or enhance the look of the room.  The dimensions I have to work with are: Ceiling 120", long wall 112", short wall 42" to the light switch or 48" if I incorporate or move the switch box.

Thanks for any help

Forgot to mention the formal dining room has this built into the wall.  Should I stay close to its design?

Thanks steve, but I am thinking something more like this kind of design...  I have a sketch of what I want but the scanner crapped out on me.

I also have some more woodwork on one other wall of the room.  This is over the fireplace.

I have a good idea of what I want, I just need to figure out how to build it...

I thought you didn't want something flat? Maybe our definition of flat isn't the same thing?  ???  That's a nice looking piece. When you say flat I envision a piece along the wall to the left of your TV, where the picture is currently hanging. If you build it flat and include the ability to rotate the TV that would meet your viewing needs.  I would be inclined to build a corner unit and then transition to a flatter unit for additional storage.  I like the looks of having the piece surround your TV, makes it look more like it's built in.

You are right about making it a corner piece.  The one in the link is flat and I dont want that, but like the overall asthetics.  I am wanting a corner piece with an extension to the left of the TV.  I want to make it look simular to the other woodwork in the house.

If you want to get "fancy" and money isn't a concern you could add a lift, which would give you the look of built in furniture vs an entertainment center, http://www.tvlift.com/?_vsrefdom=lift&gclid=CJr71cDi3ZgCFQ9JagodNTkCeQ

Add two lifts one for the TV and transition to a hidden bar that lifts up.  Getting a bit carried away, just throwing out ideas.

I'm sure others will have better ideas.  Jerry Work is sure creative, I'd like to hear what he would build there.

The lifts are cool but not really practical for my application.  Thanks for getting me on track.

Here is one idea, rather informal.  Fits right in the corner.  The plans called for doors, I chose to leave it open.

An upper piece could be added to cover the screen as well.

I believe the plan was from Woodsmith.

Prater,

IMO corner built-ins look silly. I think that a long credenza would look good on that wall. The TV would be placed in the corner and be able to articulate or swivel to the best viewing angle but put back flat when not in use. I think that would look the best and most elegant. But what the heck do I know.  ;D I am full of opinions.

I was originally going to put the tv in the center but its hard to view from the chair on the oposite side of the fireplace.  I will move the tv around a bit and see if I can come up with something else.  Once I do get it figured out is there a good web reference for assembling bookshelves with drawers?

i would flip the light switch on the back side of the wall then build a unit at an angle and incorporate from floor to ceiling and tie it in with the woodwork. do some wainscot to match the column and cabinet doors to match.  have one speaker on each side of the cab, built in then go down the other wall with some bookcase unit not to wide though.

crown on top.  you can do it.... make it great not just a small stand like in the other picture.  I will seach my pic files and add some more ideas later today.  my tv is in a corner unit I made and it works great, someday I will make doors for it.... its been 3 years.  I will add a pic of it. also
