1/4" router collet.

Chaps, I guess I'm going to be slaughtered for asking but is it possible to use the 1/4" router collet and nut from my Dewalt 625 router on my OF 1400? I discovered some 1/4" router bits that I never knew I had and they are ideal for my ongoing project. True, I could use my Dewalt router but I like my OF 1400 more. I've not tried putting the collet and nut on yet but I'm curious to know whether the nut is a standard size among the manufacturers? If it is and assuming the collet is compatible is it worth having a go? At 22K rpm I'm a bit hesitant to experiment.

As far as I know there isn't a standard size and I doubt the collet will fit. Here in the US the OF1400 comes with a 1/4" collet so I know Festool makes one to fit.

Thanks Brice. I don't have my OF1400 box to hand but reading the Festool UK website they list the 8mm, 12mm, and 1/2" collets as standard items in the box. Pity about that. I'll have to take out a second mortgage no doubt to buy another collet, assuming it will fit. Otherwise, I'll take my black-and-yellow out of the loft and hope the Festool police are not looking.

I myself would not try to change them out. When it comes to rpm, the router is the fastest and therefor most dangerous out there. You gotta respect that.

If you can do a little research you may find that it is okay. I know that one of the aftermarket spindle extensions lists as interchangeable the 1400 and 2000 along with several other routers. This particular model uses the spindle taper and thread for mounting. This would only be okay if the tapers and threads were made to the same standard, so I am lead to believe the Festool collet and nut MAY be interchangeable with others. I can't remember which extendion this was but a little website surfing could probably give you the answer.

If the collet taper and the threads match then you might have a shot at it.  Just keep in mind that stupid is not against the law.

As for me I would probably just buy the collet for the router...the possible damage to you, the router and the bit will likely cost more than the collet.

Peter should be able to tell as he finger tightens the nut, assuming the nut fits nicely. The collet should grab the shank with no play as the slack is taken up. It should feel exactly the same as in his DeWalt 625. Based on what I saw at the link I posted I will bet he is okay.
