Apparently this is in the pipeline:

A new plunge saw that uses 1 18V battery: TS 55 KSEB
A new delta sander that uses 1 18V battery: DTSC 200
An 8Ah battery that uses tabless cells: TBX8
A 4Ah battery that uses tabless cells: TBX4
A systainer charger for 4 batteries: SYS-MC 6/4

The new cordless plunge saw with TBX8 battery is showing on the front page of the French Festool website today...

Oh, yes please. I've become so annoyed with the second battery getting in the way of the handle, I considered going to a corded model. Has a light too, according to the blurb.

Not tool related, but related to this thread.

The phrase “a little bird told me” originated some 500 years ago. The meaning is the same now as then. Probably not of much interest to most woodworkers, but I find word origins fascinating. I’m constantly checking etymologies.

I wonder why they wouldn't upgrade the 60mm saw to cordless, rather than busting out another revision of the 55. I'm skeptical of the one battery solution -- one of the incredible things about the TSC55 is how the two battery platform matches or even exceeds the power of the corded model, especially near max cutting depth. Perhaps the new battery model is able to make up the difference?

One of the reasons I've stayed away from the cordless Mafell MT55 is because it only operates with a single battery.

I've ripped down 14 ft lengths of 5/4 white oak using my single battery HKC and never had an issue, battery dies I've got a fresh one in the charger waiting. The 2-battery TSC 55 just feels awkward, especially if you're just breaking down sheet materials, the single-battery model looks like it'd be an upgrade similar to thinner-kerf blades.

Tabless 21700 cells in Festool's battery packs are an improvement but they aren't going to be some massive game changer.

Anyone know what a Tabless Battery is? And what are its supposed qualities?
It's a different way to construct a battery giving higher current rates, quicker charging and longer battery life through reduced heat. It's an incremental improvement that will help performance but as P_K said...it's not a massive game changer.

Per Cheeses's illustration above, tab-less cells connect the entire edge of the battery's internal electrode to its end terminal so the current flows more evenly across its entire surface as it's being drawn thus eliminating bottlenecks and heat buildup. They've also been designed to allow for more material to be packed into the cell so they're higher in energy density than conventional tabbed cylindrical 2700 cells. Should be the same Festool pack, just different cells inside.

Metabo, Bosch, Dewalt et al are all moving towards either tab-less cells or pouch style ones for their packs. Festool is just trying to keep up with everyone else I suppose.

So now we know why the prices on the current 4.0, 5.0 & 8.0 batteries went down so drastically. I expect that with the release of the tabless TBX 4 battery, the current 5.0 battery will go away completely as the TBX 4 is probably the power equivalent.

Thats certainly better performance than I get from my HKC, which struggles in hardwood anything north of 1". The only thing I use it for regularly these days is when I go to the lumber yard and have to chop up boards for transport.
