Building kitchen cabinets. Video series.

Eric,

Great video (as always!), but I have a question:

I noticed it on the other cabs too - Why do you bother using pocket hole screws for the stretchers? Why not just screw through the end panel like you do for the base panels? It just seems like an extra unnecessary step.

OK, that's two questions.

And a statement. But you get the idea...

Jonathan

Hmmm…..good question.  Old habit I guess.  When I built my kitchen cabinets I used a decent plywood, not bought from a big box store.  But I was having problems with some of the stretchers splitting with the GRK screws.  I used the kreg screws and it stopped the stretchers from splitting.    I'm sure if I used a longer drill bit when pre drilling the holes for the GRK screws would have prevented the 100mm wide stretchers from splitting.

Like the high speed with the zen music. Nice. That's about the speed I want to watch things at from now on.

Great videos Erik,
I don't know your moms health or age,but you may consider going to all drawer cabs on the bottom?
Not having to get on the floor to access the back of the cab sounds good to me.

Also there are some great alternatives to the traditional "Lazy Susan" type corner arrangement .
I think Blum makes one?
The whole shelving system unfolds out of the cabinet,to allow access to all of the cabinet.

Again great series of videos, and just suggestions of how I want my cabs done when the time comes.

Awesome video, especially the PiP with 2 Erics, both working at triple or quadruple speed.

I was exhausted at the end but it was really fun to watch.

Maybe there will be an upcoming video made with the GoPro mounted on your hat so the PiP can show us what you are seeing while the main picture shows us what you are doing.

Nice job, keep it up.

Jeff, I had to  slow the video down so you guys could see me working….. [tongue]    I'm wicked fast bro!  LOL

I thought about picking up the GoPro head strap, but thought it might be a little dizzying with moving my head around a lot.    But it's something worth checking into…... [scratch chin]

I did make a mounting bracket so I can mount the GoPro to the TS55 and other tools  for some action shots.  Hopefully I can use some cool action shots in the upcoming videos.

Thanks!
Eric

Hey Eric,

Not sure if anyone has asked already, but the hold down clamps you use in the first couple of videos (that's as far as I have got so far) look like they go through the MFT holes rather than being screwed down. Can you confirm? If so, what brand/model are they please?

Keep up the good work on the videos, and hope your Mom loves the new cabinets.

The GoPro on the saw, sander and Domino will be interesting but I can't wait to see you doing a row of LR32 holes with the GoPro attached to your OF1400, especially at high speed - plunge, slide, plunge, slide, ... it will be more gut-wrenching than a roller coaster.

Just watched the video on the base corner cabinet
You did alright!
However I would put a solid piece on top just like the bottom.
You wouldn't have to go about all that work you had to do with brace and clamps
Cut the 2 pieces together to make sure you have identical pieces. ;)

Wuffles,  The clamps that I'm using are the Kreg Automaxx clamps.  Check out this video review I did…..

  Part 10…..

This videos shows the building of the pantry cabinet.    I tried using a microphone with this video.  Didn't turn out like I planned….so back to the drawing board!  So the audio at the beginning is a little rough.  Sorry.

  Happy Holidays everyone !

Thanks,  Eric

Thanks again for taking the time to video the process for the rest of us!  Happy holidays Eric!

It is ironic that audio seems to be the hardest part of video...

But these are really good even with the occasional mic problems.

Watching them emphasizes the fact that in a small / custom shop a lot more time goes into planning and setting up than is actually needed for doing the operations.  And we are not even watching what I suspect are the ++ hours you have spent thinking, researching, ordering materials, etc.

So while the fun factor is certainly there and in this case Eric's mom will enjoy a great set of custom cabinets I can see why some sort of pre-fabricated approach to cabinetry is much less expensive for most builders, contractors and owners.

Hi Eric,

Can't imagine how many hours all this took to put together; I mean the video, not the pantry. Er, maybe I can imagine: that's why you posted it at 5:47 AM?  : )    Get some rest and Merry Christmas.

Regards, Dick

Cheers Eric, found a supplier in the UK and ordered. Keep up the good work.

Hey Dick,  The early bird gets the worm bud !  I spend a few hours editing the videos, then it takes a few hours to finalize and upload the video to Youtube.  So I start the uploading to Youtube before I go to bed.  Then when 5 a.m comes around it's rise-n-shine time !

So an example….the part 10 video went like this……    around 1 p.m on Sunday I started editing the video. Having 2 cameras recording I have double the footage to watch and edit.
Around 7 I started finalizing the video to my laptop.  That finished up around 8:45.  I then started the upload process to Youtube after it finalized and it takes around 3 hours to upload the video to Youtube.  Uploading in 1080i takes FOREVER!  Sometime around 10 -11 I'm off to bed and patiently wait for the next day to start.

Merry Christmas to you and your wife !  Take care bud!

Eric

Cool !    I think they work great with the MFT tables.  I know their is a FOG member who make a mounting adapter for the Bessey Auto toggle clamp  and Kreg Automaxx clamps, but I can't remember who.  And  I'm not sure if they ship to the UK though?

Hope you get along nicely with the Kreg clamps.

Eric

Eric,
Just wanted to say your cabinet making videos are great. Keep up the good work and videos.

Rusty

Merry Christmas!

Hey Eric:
When I watch your video's I am always trying to visualize where the cabinet will go in your mothers kitchen. Do you have a plan or a layout you are working to?
I am not sure anyone has asked so my apology if you have already answered and I missed it.
Tim

OK, up to Part 8 now. Quick question (as a very recent Domino owner), why the pocket holes to join the rails and stiles? Surely that's more effort than using dominos? Especially as you are pocket holing from the back to hold the whole front on anyway?

I figure there's no right or wrong answer, I'm just making sure that if I were to do it myself, I'd be going for dominos and I don't want there to be a wrong way.
