Domino 500 - 16mm depth is really 18mm?

Working with the 4mm bit led me to doing some measurements regarding the depth settings on the Domino 500.

The 20mm depth setting appears to be 20mm from the base to the fence. (I think it is called the fence. I am referring to the part that sets angles and depth.)

But the 16mm setting appears to be 18mm.

Am I missing something? Has anyone else noticed this?

Same on my machine, where the true depth is slightly greater than the advertised depth on all the plunge settings.

EDIT: I just reread and saw that you are referring to the height/fence gauge. Keep in mind that the number on the thickness gauge refers to a hypothetical total material thickness, where you are trying to place the cutter dead center on that material. The distance from the base of the machine to the middle of the cutter is 10 and always 10, but that is sort of immaterial since you register the machine off the fence rather than the base. A 20mm setting just happens to be 10mm from the fence as well as the base to the middle of the cutter. But at 16mm, which translates to 8mm from the top of the fence to the middle of the mortise the measured distance from the base of the machine to the fence ends up being 18mm (10 + 8).

Thank you, ear3. I get it now. I knew the depth setting was actually the thickness of material, but I didn't factor in the constant 10mm from the base or that the important measurement was from the fence.

This stuff makes my head hurt sometimes.
