Domino bits

I would not say for sure the bit did melted.
I try to take a picture but my camera had a hard time focusing.

What I can see is that the edge are rounded and blackened and sure don't cut anymore

Why not send the degraded bit to Festool, describe to them how you were using it when it broke and ask them to explain what caused it to break?  I have had no problems thus far, but my usage is rather slim - only the 5mm bit, and only up to 40 mortices at a time (for 20 dominos) without a break, and only about ~150 total on the bit in a mix of hardwoods, hardware plywood and particle core melamine.  The only issue I have had is when I misplaced some mortises, glued in some dominos to fill them and made new mortises without waiting a fw hours for the Titebond glue to dry.  This quickly gummed up th bit.  When I realized it, I stopped and cleaned the bit.  I am still using that bit.

I had the tip of my 5mm bit break off as well. Admittedly i was cutting into tropical hardwood (balau), but the bit was as good as new, it had only done like 20 plunges.
Anyway, sent it back to festool and got a new one delivered no problem  8)

I've done many dozens of mortises into Burmese teak w/ 5 mm bit and have had no problems at all.

I just got off the phone with Festool.
They say they haven't heard of any problem and are not sure what could have happened but they are sending a new bit.

I have several of these bit one of them broke on my first cut.  When looking at the break you can see the bit had an air bubble or something that prevented the metal from forming.  I have sceen this twice.
