Durable finish for dining room table

I would appreciate any recommendations for a durable finish to go on my dining table.  The previous finish easily damaged with when exposed to warm/hot plates.

Also, what is the most effective way to remove the current finish?  I normally sand it off but the finish residue clogged the paper.  I believe the current finish is an oil modified Polyurethane.
 
M.L. Campbell Eurobild Clear, or any good 2K urethane.

Strip with soy stripper, sand. It will clog paper, don't burn through the veneer.
