Flooring Question

Hi

Just need a little advice on refinishing my ground floor flooring

It is 22mm solid oak so sanding isnt an issue. I intend to do the edges with my R/O
and a friend that does floors is going to come over with what he calls a trio ?
to do the main areas

Now my question is Originally the oak boards had a small chamfer all around
which has now after probabbly 15-20 years got very grubby 
How do I sand the chamfer ?
I dont think we are going to sand enough off to lose the chamfer
is it just a case of hands and knees with a block (dont fancy that idea)
Im sure there must be an easy way

any tips on refinishing the floor would be appreciated thanks

Hi Mick,

I‘m not sure if this is an option, but Fein do make a set of sanding accessories for multitools, that allows you to make quicker work of it, compared to hand sanding at least.

I used this on the garden shed last year, where it went neatly into the tung and groove..

Might be a different thing, when looking at a floor, though.

Perhaps a router with a chamfer bit on a guide rail.

How wide is the chamfer?

  Pull type scraper or LS130?

If it is a micro bevel you will probably take it off completely when the floor is sanded.

If not, sandpaper over the edge of a square corner. It won’t take much to sand the area.

My in laws had a prefinished 3/4” thick wood floor installed.  When it was done they hated the small bevel that was around every board. So they hired a floor refinisher that showed up with a Hummel drum sander...problem solved.  [big grin]

Ask your buddy for advice. I’m sure he’s dealt with it in the past. It’s also possible that the chamfer won’t be there after your buddy is finished sanding.

I wouldn't count on the RO150 or any Festool sander (Maybe an RAS) for doing the edge work after sanding the main parts of the floor. Have your buddy bring over a real edger and get the job done in a reasonable amount of time.

The Trio should get within a 1/4” of the edge so I don’t think that you will need (or want) an edger. The Trio machine looks like a buffer but it is actually a three disc rotary sander unlike a typical floor sander that is a belt sander.
