For the car guys...

So... I don't think I've mentioned it here yet, but I'm addicted to this summer's underdog blockbuster hit, Pacific Rim.  Some may know that Blu-Ray was released yesterday, so naturally, I picked up my copy and oogled all night at the absolutely amazing imagery and mechanical detail.

A thought did pop up.  Just exactly how large are these Jaegers and Kaiju?  Do we have any direct analog comparison today?  So I started Google'ing around (yes this is what I do afterhours when I'm supposed to be working on our online store *hinthint and decide to noodle off).

Stumbled across this bad boy:

Seawise Giant, later Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, Knock Nevis, Oppama, and finally Mont, was a ULCC supertanker and the longest ship ever built. She possessed the greatest deadweight tonnage ever recorded. Fully laden, her displacement was 657,019 tonnes (646,642 long tons; 724,239 short tons), the heaviest ship of any kind, and with a draft of 24.6 m (81 ft), she was incapable of navigating the English Channel, the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal. Overall, she was generally considered the largest ship ever built, as well as the largest self-propelled human-made object ever built. She was sunk during the Iran-Iraq War, but was later salvaged and restored into service. She was last used as a floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) moored off the coast of Qatar in the Persian Gulf at the Al Shaheen Oil Field.

The vessel was sold to Indian ship breakers, and renamed Mont for her final journey in December 2009. After clearing Indian customs, she was sailed to, and intentionally beached at Alang, Gujarat, India for demolition.

To put that into goth-tech sci-fi perspective and comparison:

Gipsy stood at 260 ft tall, weighing in at 1980 tons
Seawise Giant lays 1504.1 ft long, weighing in at 91704.48 tons

Granted in retrospect, a land-going vehicle versus a sea-faring vessel isn't even remotely a valid comparison anyway, but hey, let's just enjoy the absolute grandeur of scale of human marvel yea?  ::)

And icing on the cake... this post wouldn't be complete without this... The Helicarrier

Rain/snow season is around the corner, so let's get those windshields prepped up right.  First line of defensive driving is improving visibility!

I just did mine last night, scraper + clay + rain-x... now just waiting for the rain to come.  Bring it!
