High Quality Chisels

Hand tools = traditional craftsmen that remain true to there craft
Machines = people too lazy for hand tools
CNC = people too lazy for machines

I do find it strange but I am kinda looking forward to getting some new chisels!   I do believe I am both hand and machine minded but I do admit I do lean towards machine more!  Even though some people find that a disadvantage I believe people who lean towards hand tools more has a disadvantage especially in todays world if you wanna make a living.

I think in order to be adaptable to any situation you need knowledge and skill in both hand and machine tools. I've always believed skill in hand tools improves skill in power tools as well. Some times it's faster to pull out a hand tool and finish the job with it than it takes to set up a machine.

Money don't buy you happiness  ;)

Never said it did.   Maybe why hes always doing other things keeping him self occupied.   A while ago I went over to see him and he was showing me some windows he was designing lol Hes funny cus he messes with everything he has a few CNC machines which are all in pieces cus he loves to modify them which he can easily do cus he has his metal place up the road   ..... any way he was showing me these windows he had made half corian half wood lol He was saying the advantage of the wood being protected against the weather elements but then have the nice stained wood look on the inside.  They where his experiments dont know if he got bored of that or is still trying to come up with a better way of building a window I dont know but to me that seems like fun! Having the time and money to mess around building and design unique things

Dont quite know what to say to that  [blink]

I like hand tools  [thumbs up]

haahaaa! Comedy!  Just saying!  Thought it was funny!  I wouldnt ever dare do something like that my self like! The srange thing is the chair was not a bad looking chair (if you looked past the certain added extras he addedd) looked well made some effort went into has some detail on it.

A lazy man should not even consider going CNC. Talk about a time consuming learning curve. Lots of skills needed, just a different type.

Incase nobody got it, the 3 comments were just a wind up  [doh]

I don't think anybody has any doubt about the skill of a CNC operator.

One can purchase 01 steel and make their own high quality chisels and make custom handles for them.  [smile]

... I do have a steel place just up the road and im pretty sure the guy who owns it would LOVE to make something like chisels!

I think if you're truly looking for high quality chisels you get them from someone who has been doing it for a while and has worked out all the kinks. Quality chisel making is an art and a science that can take years to develop. In the case of some the Japanese chisel makers we're talking generations.

That actually depends on how you define a "CNC operator" -- I've trained many CNC operators, in larger shops that usually is a person doing the setups and just operating the machine.  The easiest people to train have little or no machining experience, they just run the programs.  Skilled manual machine operators have more trouble because it make them very nervous seeing the rapid machining going on without their hands on the hand wheels.  [eek]  Once they've overcome that fear, they of course make the best programmers because they have an in depth understanding of machining operations and they just have to learn to program.  I used to teach CNC programming and machine operation and I always felt it was important to teach basic G-code programming so they had a handle on what drives the machines and could quickly recognize a bad move before a crash.  After that CNC graphic programming is a piece of cake to teach.

I can't imagine trying to compete in manufacturing (metal or wood) without CNC machines, that is only having manual machine tools.  A good analogy is a wood shop without ANY electric trying to compete with a power tool shop.

That's very interesting. I have that very set of Lie Nielsons but I would never take them on site.  Too nice !

Interesting test.
I would also like to see a comparison test of the LN O1 chisels (25 degree primary bevel) to the LN A2 chisels -- probably result as you would expect.
