I'm building some outdoor storage cabinets and I'd like to use a stainless piano hinge for the doors. I'd appreciate some advice on sizing. In the US common sizes (open widths) appear to be 1 1/2" and 2". The doors are (roughly) 38" and 79" tall. The cabinets are built from 3/4" nominal ACX plywood, the doors will be edge banded and inset.

What would be the appropriate size of hinge to use?

Since you're going to make outdoor cabinets, I'd suggest using solid brass hinges to avoid rusting.  Brass piano hinges at that length will be scary-expensive.  [scared]  I'd suggest that you rethink and go with three appropriate shorter hinges per door.  [smile]

I was planning on using stainless hinges. Definitely more than, standard butt hinges, but I like the look and am hoping that they will be stronger (I plan to hang some tools on the doors). And… I'm still curious about how one goes about selecting piano hinge  [smile]

You need a 1-1/2" hinge with 3/4" plywood. A 72" long one should work just fine.

Depending on how tight you are to the opening strike side, you may have to back cut the strike side of the door slightly.
