The new RO 90 DX multi-mode sander --- What are your questions?

With two shapes, all the types and grits, it is no easy job to come up with packages that satisfy everyone. For my Domino I like having every size Domino in a Systainer, but for a sander, do I really want every shape, type and grit? Well, if someone GAVE it to me, sure! This is the kind of thing where speculation, even based on other sanders, has limits. I think putting this together by task is the way to go, but still not easy. For now I will be happy with a sample pack with the sander. I will try them out, note which ones I find most useful for my applications and go from there.

I would be happy with a basic selection for woodworking. Nothing fancy [big grin]

Finally gave in and tried to pre-order the RO 90 from local store. Went to them because the owner has taken care of me in the past.  He was not there when I went in and it showed.  The employees did not have any idea what it was and could not answer simple questions. Ended up not pre-ordering it. I do not think I will make large purchases from them in the future.

Does any one know if it is released 1 March, does that mean we should be able to get it 1 March or is that when Festool ships them?

Joe, dealers who have ordered their inventory should receive it in time for the March 1st launch. In other words, you should be able to walk out of the store with it on that date.

Joe,

Pleasure speaking with you and glad I answered some questions, but I would ask that  you don't give up on your dealer. The RO is so new, relatively few dealers, let alone employees, are familiar with it. We dealers haven't even got our own "RO demo tool" to get familiar with it yet. The employees have over a month to bone up on it, before it's available. Chances are, if you got taken care of before, you will get taken care of again.

Welp, I have to report that there will not be an abrasive assortment offered with the launch of the RO 90. It's not that we don't want to do it, it's just not something that we can make happen in time for the launch.  [crying]

There are some dealers who are willing to bust abrasives into smaller quantities. I would encourage you to work with them if you want to create your own customized assortment.

Sorry, guys.

Will there be an insert available that will hold both round and delta papers?

Here are some pictures from Mosez, I thought they might be useful so I'm posting them here.  The pics show the inside of the Systainer so you can get a sense of what goes where and what accessories you can fit inside.

I like to know what I can fit in the Systainer so I can decide if I'll need another Sys for the accessories.  As you can see there is plenty of room for additional sanding pads, abrasives and the extended delta pad without the Systainer being overly crowded.

Thanks again to Mosez for sharing the pictures. [thumbs up]

Dumb question please - can the sander be used in all three modes with the delta pad? I'm guessing yes, but the Festool site is a little vague on that.

No, the delta pad is orbital mode only.

Hey Brice, thanks. But the Festool site says"

"Flip the switch one last time and the Rotex RO 90 DX becomes a sander that can be converted from a circular pad to a triangular delta pad in seconds (no tools required). Reach into corners and tight crevices. The gear driven orbit gnaws through the toughest materials and finishes. The lightweight, compact format eliminates fatigue."

So is this "aggressive gear driven" or "random orbital" - the word "gnaw" makes me think the former...? Sorry, still confused by this.

I used the RO 90 back in Sept. and I can tell you that the delta pad is not RANDOM orbit, unless something was changed.

Okay, there are three modes

1 Aggressive Gear Driven
2. Random Orbital
3. Polishing

The round pad does 1, 2 and 3.
Delta pad does just #1?

Right?

It does the same thing as the DX93, just with more ommph.

The switch in part limits the delta pad's travel.  Position #1 Rotex mode, Position #2 RO mode, position #3 lets you take the round pad off and put the delta pad on and sand with it.  It is a gear driven orbital sanding mode.

i think it would defeat the purpose of a triangular pad (let alone security issues) to make it spin in circular motion around its centre point. there is actually a notch coming out of the bottom of the sander to prevent it from doing exactly that. you can only fit the triangular pad when in orbital mode. you CAN use round pads in orbital mode, too. i try thinking of a situation where this would be superior to rotex mode or random orbit mode?
