Is OF1010 Too Close To OF1400?

I just got the LR32 system and I'm going to be using it with my OF1400.  Thing is, does the LR32 work better with an OF1010?  Secondly, if I already have a 1400, would the 1010 be like having another 1400?  I just want to make sure that I'm buying efficiently and not doubling up on my Festools...does that make sense?

I have an OF1010 and OF2200. I am getting an OF1400 now because of the ability to use 1/2 shanks without coping with the size of the OF2200. You can also use it later with a CMS table here in the US.

There is overlap for sure and it depends on how much you need your routers for each application.  The 1010 was designed for the LR32 and it is light and easy to plunge up and down for all the pins and not as cumbersome as the 1400 in the long run.  One thing I like about the 1400 is you can screw the LR32 plate to the router as opposed to the screw-clamps -- to me that is a more secure system and I have had the clamps loosen on the 1010 before.  However, if I were plunging holes all day I think that the 1010 would be a little easier to manage.  If you need a router for other tasks at the same time as the need for LR32 drilling then it might make perfect sense to add one to your collection and have it set-up for these situations.  If not, then I think that the 1400 would serve you perfectly well.  Just my .02.

I wouldn't call them duplication.  Depends greatly on how many routers you plan to own .. The OF-1010 is really nice to use .. OF-1400 is much more capable.

Unique feature of the 1010 is that it's light and can be used one handed.

I agree with duplication of capabilities.
Mostly depends of what you are trying to do with. I have a collection of bits that only come in 1/2 shanks but are rated for hand and router use. I can't use them with my MKF700 or OF1010. Some times I have the feeling my OF1010 struggles when being used with
VS600 larger bits but the OF4200 is too heavy for me to use on this case.

Again, it always depends what your intentions are but in general one can't have enough Festool equipment.

The 1010 is more nimble in the lr32 but I prefer the way the 1400 secures to the lr32 plate...there's basically no chance of slippage and misplacement of centering.  There's definitely overlap due to collet sizes but the 1400 can spin a 1/2" shank and that sets it apart for sure...it's much more top heavy than the 1010 though. I use each of my routers based on application!

The 1010 is so nice to use!  I just recently got it, used a bosch 1617 plunge/fixed before that and it is night and day.. i also have the LR32 and the 1010 works like a dream with it. light, easy and fast to setup and super smooth plunges.  i keep my bosch mounted to the table now and will eventually pick up a 1400 so i can use 1/2" bits without unbolting the bosch

think of how often you are hand routing with a 1/2" bit.. if you could mostly make do with 1/4" and 8mm i think you will find yourself reaching for the 1010 every chance you can

Sold off the 1400 and got a 1010 to replace it. Bigger bits I swing with my makita RP2300 router, which is a great router for the price (in Europe).

Good advice here - as usual. Just to add a thought and that is if you have a bunch of 1/4" and/or 8mm bits on hand already, I think you will be using the 1010 more than you think.

+1!!!  I originally didn't give the OF 1010 the credit it deserves, but have become far more delighted with using it since I bought one.

The usage frequency of my Festools is:
- MFT 1080 & TS55
- OF1010
- RO 125
- belt sander
- domino
- planer
- jigsaw (since I now have a bandsaw)

It is WAY up there as a top priority Festool.
