Quote from apple website "The iMac (Mid 2010) supplies an audio signal from the Mini DisplayPort.  For this feature, use Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapters that conform to the VESA v1.1a DisplayPort Interoperability Guidelines"

Price of HDMI cables has been debated almost as much as JMB posts comments on here  [big grin].  From my knowledge I just prefer to go with the good stuff from Monster Cable.  Never had a problem with any kind of cable from them and a lifetime guarantee.  For anyone getting (or will be) into 3D television or gaming or even the current stuff, the new standard coming out for cabling is HDMI 1.4 and the quality (price) of the cable will matter.   *It's going to have the ability to run 5.1 or higher sound through 1 cable, yes 1 cable for everything.

*Clarification - This is specific to Apple products that can't get audio with the video signal over an HDMI cable currently and is also dependant on Apple making hardware changes to include HDMI 1.4 on their new models.

I was an early adapter of HDMI and did NOT get Monster cables and saved about $100 doing that. Picture and sound quality is superb (Long Live Blu ray!).

Not when I'm buyin' on the internet!  [wink]

Thats a good come back Ken I gotta give you that one!  That made me laugh!! lol

I was looking at this one because its 1.4  but I think 3 meters might just be to short for me and I need a angle one at least one end because the TV has no room at the back of the bracket.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ethernet-resolutions-technology-backwards-compatible/dp/B0043RAYCA/ref=pd_ybh_2?pf_rd_p=138755991&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=ybh&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1CMPQERYRZBXC7N1M5WM

So I might have to settle with this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Speed-Degree-Angle-Cable-Supports/dp/B003U4T8EM/ref=pd_ybh_4?pf_rd_p=138755991&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=ybh&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0S8M95KJ7J1XG3V4VBN7\

Cost less and get more meters!

I have an agreement with Festool that stipulates a minimum of one joke per day or picking on you James, whatever's funnier  [big grin].

Now for some relevent stuff.  If I read it correctly and it seems to make sense, the new HDMI 1.4 standard must be part of your hardware to give you audio and video over the single cable.  Not sure that your current 1.3 will make a difference with a 1.4 cable.  My advice is to sell the iMac immediately so your stress is reduced.  It's not a necessity and this whole internet thing is a fad.  I don't think it'll really catch on.

JMB,

What I was trying to get across is that your iMac doesn't have HDMI 1.4 built into the hardware so buying a 1.4 cable probably wouldn't give sound and video over the one cable.  If you waited till Apple comes out with the new models in the next few months, it's likely they will have HDMI 1.4 on board.  At least if you buy HDMI cables, get the 1.4 so at a later date you'll be able to make full use of them instead of buying the HDMI 1.3 cables and having to upgrade.

i am missinf something here because hdmi 1.3 transmitts a 1080p piture and 7.1 sound were as hdmi 1.4 is needed for 3D and high resolutions

ok looked it up and these are the differances

Ethernet channel
Audio return channel
4k × 2k Resolution Support
3D over HDMI

the ethernet channel being the most useful in my eyes

My Verdict about apple!   I hate them!

Im kinda regretting buying the Imac some 1 needs to punch some sense into apple and stop dem trying to create their own little world by them selfs.

1.  I wanted to plug my Imac into my 42inch flat screen TV in the kitchen.  I thought it would b simple enough!  I could play movies through the TV no problem! NO! I found out it has a strange Out Display port.  Its kinda DVI but it aint they have made their own DVI which is just Digital and not Digital/analogue or something like that. So I need a adapter! Which converts it into a standard DVI then I then a DVI/HDMI to go into my TV but DVI does not transfers sound so I need a cable for sound aswell!  WHY WHY WHY!!!!!  Why could they not just have a HDMI output?! or atleast just a normal DVI  why be different to the rest of the world?! So now I need to buy a adapter for Imac crap port to DVI  and then a DVI to HDMI cable.

2. I have an old hard drive which is firewire! I thought ill copy everything from that onto the Imac tonight! Well I find out it has not got a standard fire wire! It aint even a small one its a square one I aint never seen a square firewire port.  Only a rectangle or really small one. Well I aint got a cable to fit that so I now need to go out and buy a firewire cable to fit the Imac crap firewire port to normal firewire.

I am surprised they didnt alter the USB ports so you have to buy adapters for that.

nice Festoys  JMB - congrats  [thumbs up]

just following up on 1.) as i have the same prob on my Thinkpad T500.. but to be honest, you're lucky, cause your Apple display port DOES contain digital sound, which mine aint  [doh]
So, all you need to connect to your lovely  [drooling] display is this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-DisplayPort-Adapter-cable-Neet%C2%AE/dp/B002ERBFYM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

it converts your mini display port (which is now standard on all new PC's / Laptops) to standard HDMI, which nicely works - see the comments on the adapters..

kind regards, Mike

Nice haul JMB!  What is that long aluminum thing behind the CMS (?)  module?

Looks like a sliding table for the CMS or the PRECISIO Trimming saw
